In business and in life, we are continually faced with the question, “Will I give up or will I press on?”
A client of mine recently made the bold decision to persevere amidst daunting and insurmountable odds and the results make for a truly inspiring story.
Imagine that you have finally found an investor to launch your personal development project, and later receiving news that they must back out on the investment. Furthermore, imagine that the investment was for 250,000 dollars of hard money.
Welcome to Amanda’s situation. She came to a crossroads and the two options were distinct. She could either throw in the towel and cut her losses or she could gather the 250,000 dollars in one week.
As her coach, I pressed in with encouragement. Go out there and find the investments! In order to do that, we formulated a plan to effectively meet this goal. We generated a clear list of qualified investors she could reach out to. We tightened and edited the key language on her investment proposal. We set a financial goal for each day of that week. In doing this, her confidence grew as she saw the potential road map for success.
Now, it was time to execute.
She decided to go after multiple smaller investments the second time around. She received boosts of encouragement as she gathered several small commitments right away. She had 7 days to meet her goal by 5 pm, the next Friday. The road was still long and the time was ticking on.
It was 5:10 pm the following Friday when my phone rang. It was Amanda and I was full of confidence that she had gathered all $250,000 of the funds.
I answered, saying, “You got it!”
“I got it. I just wrapped up the last 50k and I called you!” Amanda exclaimed.
You see, Amanda’s decision to overcome this unexpected and ominous obstacle payed off incredibly. Her success was not handed to her, rather, she hustled, made contact with the right people and delivered.
Too often we give up just before crossing the finish line and we fail to relish in victory. Thomas A. Edison was a man who became very familiar with defeat, yet found success through perseverance. He once said, “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”
When you are at a crossroads, do you have a process to go through to help you make logical decisions? Do you have someone speaking words of encouragement and pushing you to explore your full potential when you are experiencing self-doubt?
