The Greatest Barrier to Your Success

The Greatest Barrier to Your Success

Which New Year’s Resolutions are you still implementing and which ones have you already abandoned?

Have you ever wondered why so few succeed or dominate in their field while the majority produce average or meager results?

Do you want 2018 to be a breakthrough year but are already back into a rut?

Before you throw in the towel and allow complacency and mediocrity to set in, take a look at possible root cause(s) to what is holding you back and remedies that will put you back on course.

Attitude-Mindset.  95% of Success is won or lost between the ears.   Henry Ford said it best, ‘Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t–you’re right.’  The first place to look and determine where the barriers lie is within.   Too often this can come from voices in the past, external and internal, that define your limits or “can’t do’s”. Very often it is simply fear.   This can range from fear of failure to fear of success.  Depending on how you are wired behaviorally, you may be naturally more optimistic or pessimistic, competitive or hesitant.  Gaining a deeper understanding of your behavior and why you do what you do, can help you to learn more about your internal strengths and development needs.  How you handle risk, failure and your determination to push through your trials when you feel like quitting, has a lot to do with how you finish.  Your attitude determines your altitude.  Any stinkin’ thinkin’ you roll around in your mind keeps you flopping around the ground like a turkey instead of soaring like an eagle!

Going from Generalities to Specifics.  Assuming your attitude is right, you must take your goals first from annual, then to monthly, weekly and daily.  The reason people fail to set and achieve large goals or have their best year ever; is because they 1- didn’t think they could or 2- didn’t know how to get there.  A specific plan becomes your road map.  Let’s say you want to lose 100 pounds in one year.  This can sound almost insurmountable until you start breaking this down.  This means you only need to lose 4 pounds (+-) per month or one pound per week! Doesn’t that sound much more attainable and less intimidating? The key to nailing your big hairy audacious goal comes down to what you do daily.  In this case, diet and exercise.  In order to realize different results you must change what you are doing, otherwise insanity has taken over.  Adjusting your diet (what and how much you eat) along with exercise (progressively more difficult and intense) will result in weight loss gain.    Achieving a large business goal works the same way.

Embracing the Pain of Discipline.   You will experience pain through this process; either the pain of discipline or regret.   Having the right attitude or specific goals still is no guarantee for success unless you apply the key disciplines, especially daily, that are required to see different results.  This is where most hit a wall.  We are a pain avoidance society.  We want it now with no pain.  Instant gratification and drive thru service is our expectation for everything.  We have come a long way from Benjamin Franklin who said, “There are no gains without pains.”  Everyone at the top of their game and field understand and experience the pain of discipline.  This is simply doing whatever activity will generate the long term results even if you don’t feel like doing it.  Pushing through the pain at that moment is critical.  Unfortunately a very small percentage (less than 5%) of the population has the fortitude and will power to implement new skills and disciplines on their own.

Reporting and Measuring Results.   This is where performance accelerates! Measuring your results means inspecting what you inspect and tracking your efforts.  Reporting these results to a Coach who can help you stay on track or get back on track if you get stuck in old ruts is absolutely critical to achieving your annual goal.   Committing to these simple but crucial steps will infinitely increase the odds of you achieving your goal.   The Winter Olympics are almost upon us.  Every Olympian followed these steps to get there and only the best will receive a Gold medal.  One thing they all have in common is a Coach.

There is still time for you to get back on track with your professional and personal goals.  Set a no obligation Complimentary Session with one of Our Coaches Today and make sure 2018 is your Best Year Ever!
