Hey Coach, what’s more important to my success – my opinion about something, my attitude about what I’m doing or what I’m selling or is does it all come down to my beliefs?
A great question! One that needs to be explored to determine the impact it has on results.
Think about this…throw out any topic, thought or idea and we will all have an opinion on it. In fact if we don’t, we’ll make one up. Webster’s defines opinion as “A belief or conclusion held with confidence, but not substantiated by positive knowledge or proof.” Being that this opinion is not founded in proof its validity is questionable. Too many times something is reported as truth when it is merely that person’s opinion. Constantly repeating it does not make it correct. Also, opinion’s change based upon the feedback received. A salesperson may have the opinion that the competitor’s product is inferior based upon someone’s opinion. Later that same sales person begins selling that product and thinks it’s great. As a result of the lack of proof, there is little power in opinions.
We can see attitude as our state of mind or feeling about a matter. This may be stronger than the opinion, yet is still subject to fluctuation as our feelings change. Too many times we see something pitched to make the buyer feel good. While feeling good is great, the thought that you feel good because you’re told that help is on the way, can be totally reversed when nothing happens. Where do we see this happening? Government promising assistance following a calamity makes the victims feel good initially. The victim thinks that they “care” about me, yet if that help does not materialize the attitude changes to resentment. The same can be said for a company that brings out a product they tout as being revolutionary or life changing, when they know it has faults. Once the truth comes out, the public distrusts that company and their people.
A belief comes about when you know, that YOU know, that YOU KNOW you are with the right company, marketing the products or services that best suit your prospects and that you are totally confident in being able to deliver. No matter what someone’s opinion or attitude about a company or product might be, when you’re a person with total belief, you won’t be swayed. We take it as noise, and rise above.
