Really, you expect me to motivate you?
This question comes up periodically and is the basis for a great discussion. Think about it, have you ever tried to motivate someone? How did it go?
What we find is that the idea of motivating others, employees, teammates, partners, comes up when the person wanting, needing or asking for motivation lacks a clear vision of they want out of life. As a result, they fail to perceive the value of their contribution to the organization and how it relates to living the life they desire. This leads to frustration, apathy and a lack of fulfillment. A truly boring life.
You, as the leader, must understand the correlation between accomplishing the organization’s mission and assuring that those who are relied on to do so are meeting their goals.
OK coach, where are you going with this?
In his book “Good to Great,” by Jim Collins demonstrates that the great leaders are servant driven leaders who made sure that they had the right people, in the right seats on the bus. Each person had the right skills and attitude for their position, and fit into the CULTURE of the organization. As a result, there was a match that allowed both the individual and the organization to run at peak performance.
This fulfilling work, met the teammates’ desire to achieve their “desperate why.” It is that why that causes them to show up for work, to put in the extra effort and take the action that self-motivates him or her to succeed.
