A great question the answer may be that you don’t. It all depends on what you’re looking to accomplish. Let me tell you a story.
Many years ago I started a new business. Lucky for me, I had the wisdom of a mentor who had been in this type of business for many years. He took me under his wing and mentored me to partial success. What I mean is that I learned how to sell and market the products for this company, however I did not learn how to truly operate an insurance agency. Perhaps you know the feeling. The areas of cash flow, hiring and staffing, the assortment of important areas left un-attended, cause the demise of many small businesses. Luckily, I was able to weather that storm and find the mentors and coaches to assist me, look at what I was doing from afar and question my methodology.
As a coach, I have seen other businesses thrive while business owners, selling the same products, failed. Looking at what was happening, it became apparent that there was a distinct difference between the two businesses. Yet, what was it? How could three people start similar businesses, at virtually the same time, with all the same tools and resources, get such different results? Think about it. All three were sharp individuals. Over 18 years one developed an exceptional business, one a fairly good business and the third a mediocre business. What was discovered was the first two people had a PURPOSE. The third merely acted like an adjunct employee for the company and never approached it as a business. The first two were open to coaching, sought advice and counsel while the third would never ask for help.
On a more recent note, a small business owner was undertaking to start a second venture because of the need to derive more income. Upon reaching out for coaching we determined where her passion truly was. This allowed us to look at her business and put in the systems that allowed her to rekindle her passion and create the revenue without diverting her focus from what she truly loved.
So, do you need a coach? If you’re moving forward in your business or profession and are looking for ways to take it to the next level, a coach can help.
